Anita Romero Torres and Karen Cobb are the 2023 Committee Chair of Mission. Second Presbyterian Church has a strong mission emphasis. We are committed to local, national, and international mission endeavors. The composition of the Mission Committee is of one Active Ruling Elder as the Chairperson and at least four active church members or friends. The Committee, on behalf of the church, works with and supports Project Share, Wings Ministry, the Storehouse, Camino de Vida, Albuquerque Interfaith, and the Guatemalan service organization called Saq B’e. Currently the Committee is exploring making our church a Sanctuary Church for immigrants. The Mission Committee continues to develop its mission outreach activities. Please contact us if you would like to get involved. |
DutiesThe duties of the Mission Committee are to participate actively in Presbyterian mission interpretation activities and in the study of mission material provided by the denomination, thereby providing leadership to the congregation. MISSION
The Mission Committee of Second Presbyterian Church continues to do shared mission and ministry with Camino de Vida and First Presbyterian churches. Together they do the Lenten Project to support Day Shelter at St. Martin’s Hospitality Center and the Rio Grande Food Project. During the six Sundays in Lent the Congregation collects socks, underwear, jeans, razors, and hygiene products, peanut butter and jelly, canned chicken and canned fruit. The Project culminates with the Lenten Mission Fiesta at First Presbyterian Church. Some ongoing and upcoming activities of the Mission Committee is the Mission trip to Guatemala in conjunction with Saq B’e which is an extension of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Further, the Committee provides financial assistance to Menaul High School, Albuquerque Interfaith, and Camino de Vida. Lastly, for six years the Committee contributes $1000.00 to Martin Luther King Multicultural Council Scholarship Fund.
The winter of 2018 the missions committee has partnered with New Mexico Faith Coalition For Immigrant Justice along with the Trans Latina Coalition. In doing so the missions committee provides a transitional space for transgender woman who have recently been granted Asylum, before they go on to their sponsored host families. As of June 21st, 2019 we have helped over 80 women.
